Minister Suharso Received Audience From ICRC
JAKARTA, KT – Minister Suharso held a virtual courtesy meeting with the ICRC, Monday (5/07/2021). The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a humanitarian organization formed in 1863 and headquartered in Geneva.
The aim of the ICRC is to ensure protection and provide humanitarian assistance to victims of armed conflict and violence.
The ICRC carries out humanitarian action and the development of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) based on the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907 on the Methods and Tools of War, the 1949 Geneva Conventions I-IV on the Protection of War Victims and the 1977 Additional Protocol I-II on International Armed Conflict and Non-International, as well as Protocol III of 2005 concerning the distinction of symbols.
The ICRC started working in Indonesia in 1942 and its existence was formally recognized by the government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1987. The ICRC’s activities in Indonesia focus on the promotion of IHL and capacity building of the Indonesian Red Cross.
The meeting between the Minister Suharso and the ICRC discussed the plan to distribute humanitarian aid to Palestine through ICRC.
The distribution of the aid is currently still in the process of discussing a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Meanwhile, the target recipients of aid are Palestinian residents including prisoners from Gaza and the West Bank.
The types of assistance that will be provided include improving the quality of life and strengthening economic resilience, water and habitat restoration activities, health services and physical rehabilitation.
